Dear Reader,
Welcome to Bloomsbury Academic. We are a new imprint of the Bloomsbury Publishing Group. Our aim is to publish world-class research, both empirical and theoretical, across the humanities and social sciences. We will focus on developing interdisciplinary work on themes of urgent contemporary significance. These themes include democracy and citizenship, access to knowledge, environment, ethics, the city, globalization, multiculturalism/hybridity and up-to-date research methods.
To supplement our research-based programme we have bought three upper-level textbook lists from Hodder, in the areas of Media & Communications, History and English Literature.
In History we publish on British, European, Asian and African history, including economic history. In Literary Studies we focus on postcolonial writing, and on the global impact of English language and culture. In Media and Communication, we are building a list centred on comparative studies, digital issues and political and scientific communication. In Sociology we are working especially on migration and transnationalism and on the sociology of sport. These are some of the preliminary strands of our publishing. Much more is planned.
Starting a new imprint in this harsh economic climate may seem foolhardy. However, we believe that our business model will not only be sustainable, but that it will enable scholars to reach one another and communicate without the barriers prevalent in more traditional models – whether in print or e-Book format. While our research-based print publications will be predominantly in hardback, we will also publish in paperback (like Remix by Lawrence Lessig) and we have the sales and marketing power of the Bloomsbury Publishing Group behind us: one of the most successful publishing companies in the last quarter of a century.
At Bloomsbury Academic we are committed to maintaining the highest of academic standards and traditional publishing values, ensuring quality editorial selection, peer-review, editing, formatting, marketing, promotion and distribution worldwide.
Our use of our Creative Commons licences for research-based publications protects copyright while offering free and easy access online for non-commercial use. By this means our authors can expect to have their works reach the audiences they were intended for, and not only those who can afford the print copy. Our investigations show that for the kind of research-led books we are proposing, there are enough purchasers (both libraries and individuals) to make this possible.
Our enhanced e-book project will start in 2010 when our specially commissioned platform is up and running. In the meantime our textbooks are available in print while our research-led publications will be on this site as PDF's.
If you want to submit a book proposal, please use our form under the author drop-down menu, or contact the relevant editor directly. Please have a look at our FAQs page, and contact me with any queries or comments.
Yours,
Dr Frances Pinter, Publisher
